PROGRAM OVERVIEW

Internship

The AIB can arrange for internship possibilities in various fields in the Cologne-Bonn region, Germany. Possible fields range from German businesses, scientific partners, political and cultural institutions to international NGOs with focus on:

  • Engineering (electrical, mechanical, civil, environmental…)
  • Science (Mathematics, Physics, Biology, Chemistry…)
  • Communication / Globalization
  • Sustainability / Fair Trade / Development Cooperation
  • Digitalization / Innovation / Cyber Security
  • Entrepreneurship / Customer Relations
  • Education, and more upon request, specific interests of the student and availability of internship.

 First choice of internship interest not guaranteed.

International Professional Career Development Course

The Engineering Internship Program also includes the International Professional Career Development course. This course is designed to provide students with the necessary knowledge and skills that help them to interact successfully in their working environment. The course builds on the students’ first-hand experience in their internship and provides models for critical reflection as well as self-assessment. Furthermore, the course provides the students with basic business German and knowledge of the German labor and educational system.

In addition the course introduces students through practical exercises and activities to basic concepts from the field of intercultural communication that are relevant in and applicable to the students study abroad situation, such as:

  • culture shock & cultural adjustment
  • communication styles
  • non-verbal communication

 Program Goals & Learning Outcomes

 Students participating in this program have the opportunity to:

  • gain insight into daily operations, market-position, customer relations, future perspectives, and challenges of companies/organizations in Germany/ Europe,
  • improve analytical and critical thinking skills,
  • enhance their ability to transfer theoretical knowledge into practical work tasks,
  • expand their ability to work independently,
  • identify problems and develop suitable alternative options for action,
  • increase German language and communication skills,
  • improve their personal competences and intercultural skills

Students participating in this program receive:

  • a certificate for the successful completion of an international internship by the internship organization/company and by AIB, that can be added to the professional resume
  • valuable network opportunities for international career development in future

Program Outline

Format: 8-week internship extension of Spring Semester Program

Pre-Requisite: Successful participation in the preceding Lafayette Engineering Semester Program at AIB. As part of it: Successful completion of a *for-credit* German Language class in this program.

Internship Dates: May 6 – July 1, 2020

Internship Program Costs:  $ 3.335

Included AIB Services:

  • Board and lodging
  • Public-transportation pass in Bonn, that covers commute to the place of internship
  • Internship placement (internship takes place on four days/week)
  • International Professional Career Development Course (1 day/week is dedicated to the accompanying class)
  • Mentoring and internship support
  • Visa assistance
  • Cultural activities
  • 24-hour AIB emergency services

Application Process, Deadlines & Payment

Step 1: Submit application documents by November 15:

  • English CV (please use CV template)
  • Motivation letter (please use Personal Motivation letter guidelines)
  • Most recent transcript of records
  • Basic German language skills (fulfilled by successful participation in German class during Lafayette Engineering Spring Semester Program in Bonn)

Step 2: Down payment to AIB (December)

  • $ 500 after internship program acceptance by AIB
  • Payed by Paypal, check or domestic wire transfer (details will be provided).

Step 3: Personal interview with AIB Internship coordinator in Bonn (January)

Step 4: Final payment to AIB (due March 15)

  • $ 2835 remaining amount       

Step 5: Internship Placement & On-Site Introductory Visit
