AIB Summer Programs in full swing!

The AIB Summer Programs are in full swing!

Instead of just studying in the classroom, learning can also be a practical experience out in the field on excursions.

Below you can see some impressions of the various field trips and excursions some of the programs have already done!

For example, last week, the Texas A&M University Sustainable Communities program went on a hike up to the Drachenfels and did a Rhine cruise where they got to enjoy the beautiful Rhineland – from above and from the water. They also went to Andernach, ‘the edible city’ to explore a park where, instead of flowers, vegetables, fruit and herbs are grown.

The German Language program has also already been to several German cities in the region. After learning about the Romans in Trier and visiting Aachen, they also explored Mainz, where Johannes Gutenberg invented letterpress printing. They even got to do some letterpress printing themselves and were able to take home their prints! Applied learning at its best!

The Internship program did some teambuilding activities on the weekend. Together, they went to the climbing park ‘Schwindelfrei’ in Brühl to learn how to overcome obstacles and solve other problems as a team – important skills that are helpful for mastering their internships in Germany!

The Loyola Marymount University Summer program visited Salzburg, the musical Mozart City, and explored the Berchtesgardener Land. A visit to BMW and hiking around the Königsee were just some of the highlights!

Besides learning about the Neurophysiology of Music, the Texas A&M University History of Medicine program has been to visit the beautiful city of Wien and have done short excursions up and down the Middle Rhine Valley, to Cologne and Koblenz. They are now on their way to the north of Germany, where they will, amongst other sites, visit the Hannover Medical School.

Time flies for the Columbia College Chicago Summer Dok Program! Three weeks ago they were in Berlin where they saw and learned a lot about German history! It’s now time for them to shoot the DOCs! Filming, here we come! And just last week our Summer DOK students met with the Musicube composers who will provide a score for their films - so much talent in one room.

The University of North Carolina at Wilmington Criminal Justice program, which is taking place for the first time this year, has been busy doing all sorts of excursions to learn about the criminal justice system in Germany and Europe. A visit to the German Federal Court of Justice in Karlsruhe and a trip to Nuremberg to learn about the Nuremberg trials were just some of the exciting learning experiences.

All in all, the first summer programs are going great and we cannot wait to see what the rest of the summer has in store!

Stay tuned and check out some pictures below!

A handshake with the German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier!

Our AIB students had the chance yesterday to briefly meet Germany’s new President Frank-Walter Steinmeier.

Usually, our students are greeted by the city of Bonn’s mayor at the Old Town Hall – an already pretty impressive event. But sometimes, if the stars all align in the right way and with a little bit of luck, students are greeted by the President of Germany.

Yesterday, President Steinmeier visited Bonn as part of his inaugural tour. Before signing the Golden Visitors’ Book of Bonn at the Old Town Hall, the President was greeted by a cheerful crowd on the market square.

And of course, our students weren’t just standing on the sidelines! They were right in the thick of it in the front row hoping to catch a glimpse of the President.

But what happened next, nobody really expected!

President Steinmeier walked right up to them, shaking hands and greeting them. After inquiring where they were from, the President was informed by Bonn’s mayor Ashok Sridharan and our colleague Susanne Jansen that those students were from the AIB, an organization the city of Bonn is very proud of and which greatly contributes to Bonn’s significance as an international location.

This was definitely one of the highlights of the program, a great honor and surely a moment that will not be forgotten by the students.

You can check out the interaction in the video below:

Thank you President Steinmeier and Welcome to Bonn!
